Travel Tips

Arrival | Departure

To be propertly prepared when traveling to Jamaica, I've compiled a list of travel tips. Check back often, as I'll be adding more in the coming weeks!

Arrival

  • Your plane will land on the tarmac, and stairs will be put up against the doors. Some planes have both a front & back door. I always sit as far to the rear as possible, so I can deplane quickly.

  • Walk through the terminal, following the crowd, and enter Immigrations. Here you'll need to provide your ID: either a passport, OR a driver's license & certified copy of your birth certificate (applies to US citizens only... I don't know what other countries require)

  • Go down either set of stairs to claim your baggage. After doing so, go through one of the Customs lines that says "Nothing to Declare". The lines on the far left are usually the fastest.

  • Upon exiting Customs, go through the door and look for your hotel desk. They are around the corner to the left.

  • Porters will be waiting for you, and expect a tip of $1.00 US per bag. If you don't want to use a porter, simply tell them "No thank you" and they will leave you alone.

  • There are money exchanges inside the terminal, but it is not necessary to change any. The exchange rate is usually terrible, and everyone accepts US dollars

  • If you want to buy some beer for the road, vendors are outside the terminal. They will offer bottles of beer in a plastic bag full of ice.
