How do you get to Jamaica?
There's only two ways to get to Jamaica: fly on an airplane, or on a
cruise ship. The cruise ships have ports in Ocho Rios or Montego Bay, and
offer just a sampling of the island of Jamaica. Not enough time, in
my opinion, to see everything there is to see! Your best bet is to fly
into Montego Bay Airport, and stay awhile.
Take a Plane
My personal preference is Air Jamaica. This airline has been voted the
#1 airline in the Caribbean, and the reason is it's service. Not many
airlines offer food service anymore, but this one does! Food for all,
even in coach, PLUS complimentary champagne!
Another good thing about Air Jamaica is that it offers a number of non-stop
flights. No worries about missing your connection when you fly this airline!
A number of other airlines also fly into Sangster International Airport
in Montego Bay. These include, but are not limited to: American, Northwest,
US Airways, Delta, and Air Canada. The majority of these have connecting service,
depending on where your travel originates. As a resident of Texas, I can
take Delta through Atlanta, Northwest through Memphis or American through
Miami. This makes for a long day both ways!
I've also taken the charters from Dallas, which are a great way to get to
Jamaica. These are non-stop, and much cheaper than the commercial airlines.
You might want to check with Funjet, Apple, Adventure Tours, MLT Vacations,
or one of the other tour operators to see if you can get a charter flight.
They are usually seasonal, flying May through August.
Taking a Cruise?
Although I haven't personally taken a cruise to Jamaica, I've taken cruises
to other destinations. While it's a great way to sample an island, you
don't really get to see much during the short time you are ashore.
The ships port in either Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. If you port in Ocho
Rios, you must visit Dunn's River Falls. It's
also a great place for shopping, if you can get past the port shops. In
Montego Bay, try Margaritaville for some quick fun, visit the beach,
or shop until you drop. The people are friendly, the prices are negotiable,
and you can find some great deals if you venture past the port shops.
